Seasonal variabilities of low-latitude mesospheric winds

چکیده
Observations of mesospheric winds over a period of four years with the partial re ̄ection radar at Tirunelveli (8.7°N, 77.8°E), India, are presented in this study. The emphasis is on describing seasonal variabilities in mean zonal and meridional winds in the altitude region 70±98 km. The meridional winds exhibit overall transequatorial ̄ow associated with dierential heating in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. At lower altitudes (70±80 km) the mean zonal winds reveal easterly ̄ow during summer and westerly ̄ow during winter, as expected from a circulation driven by solar forcing. In the higher altitude regime (80±98 km) and at all altitudes during equinox periods, the mean zonal ̄ow is subjected to the semi-annual oscillation (SAO). The interannual variability detected in the occurrence of SAO over Tirunelveli has also been observed in the data sets obtained from the recent UARS satellite mission. Harmonic analysis results over a period of two years indicate the presence of long-period oscillations in the mean zonal wind at speci®c harmonic periods near 240, 150 and 120 days. Results presented in this study are discussed in the context of current understanding of equatorial wave propagation.

Correlations of mesospheric winds with subtle motion of the Arctic polar vortex
This paper investigates the relationship between high latitude upper mesospheric winds and the state of the stratospheric polar vortex in the absence of major sudden stratospheric warmings. A ground based Michelson Interferometer stationed at Resolute Bay (7443 N, 9458 W) in the Canadian High Arctic is used to measure mesopause region neutral winds using the hydroxyl (OH) Meinel-band airglow em...
متن کاملLidar measurements of mesospheric temperature inversion at a low latitude
The Rayleigh lidar data collected on 119 nights from March 1998 to February 2000 were used to study the statistical characteristics of the low latitude mesospheric temperature inversion observed over Gadanki (13.5 N, 79.2 E), India. The occurrence frequency of the inversion showed semiannual variation with maxima in the equinoxes and minima in the summer and winter, which was quite different fr...
متن کاملTurbulence characteristics in the tropical mesosphere as obtained by MST radar at Gadanki ( 13 . 5 ◦ N , 79 . 2 ◦ E )
Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates (ε) and eddy diffusion coefficients (K z) in the tropical mesosphere over Gadanki (13.5 • N, 79.2 • E), estimated from Doppler widths of MST radar echoes (vertical beam), observed over a 3-year period, show a seasonal variation with a dominant summer maximum. The observed seasonal variation of ε and K z in the mesosphere is only partially consistent wi...
متن کاملDiurnal variations of temperature and winds inferred from TIMED and UARS measurements
Owing to their sampling properties in local solar time, both the TIMED and UARS spacecrafts provide the opportunity to quantitatively study the mesospheric thermal tides. The information though is limited because it takes the TIMED instruments 2 months to cover the full range of 24 hours, almost twice as long as UARS. We present here the results of an analysis, in which the seasonal and global-...
متن کاملVariability of the American Monsoon Systems (G3)
The word monsoon is derived from an Arabian word referring to season: it was the term used by sailors to describe the seasonal reversal of the winds over the Arabian Sea. It is now applied to low latitude regions that experience pronounced changes in the low-level circulation and precipitation regimes that result from the seasonal cycle of heating associated with the reversal of the temperature...
